Deputy CFO for Strategy, NASA



Andrew Hunter has served as NASA’s Deputy Chief Financial Officer since 2010 and recently as the Agency Acting CFO for 15 months. In this role he leads the implementation and integration of Agency budget, performance and strategic investment analysis. Over the last several years his focus has included increasing employee engagement, executive effectiveness, organizational transformation and professional development across the CFO community at NASA. He completed and was certified in Georgetown University’s Executive Coaching program. He has recently joined the faculty of American University’s Key Executive Program, an accelerated Master’s Degree program for public sector executives where he teaches Organizational Change. Mr. Hunter served as the Budget Director for NASA’s Exploration Systems Mission Directorate, and prior to that the Budget Director for the Earth Science Program. Mr. Hunter has had several leadership development activities including a one year detail with the Chief Operating Officer of the National Geographic Society, and as Deputy for Human Resources at NASA’s Langley Research Center. He started with NASA as a Presidential Management Intern with the Space Shuttle Program. During this period he also spent a year detail at the Executive Office of the President’s Office of Management and Budget and a year working with the Spacelab project office at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville Alabama. He graduated with a BA in Anthropology from the University of Colorado/Boulder. He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa. He earned a Masters degree in Public Administration from the American University in Washington DC. While getting his Masters degree, he worked at the Government Accountability Office and at the Department of the Treasury, before joining NASA in 1988. He is married with four children and enjoys riding his motorcycle, kayaking and bicycling.
