
Garrett Berntsen

Garrett Berntsen is currently a Managing Director at Accenture Federal Services, leading their Defense and Intel Data and AI capability area. Prior to this role, Garrett served as the Deputy Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer for the Department of Defense where he led the Advana program, the Department’s largest Data and AI platform. Before coming to CDAO, he served in the Department of State as the Deputy Chief Data and AI Officer and a Director for Technology and National Security on the National Security Council. Mr. Berntsen had previously served as the Deputy Chief Data Officer for the Department of State, where he focused on leveraging evidence-based analysis and emerging technology to improve diplomatic decision-making.
Prior to joining the Department of State, he was a senior manager in Deloitte Consulting’s federal practice, where he supported the Departments of State, Transportation, and Defense with digital modernization. Mr. Berntsen served five years in the U.S. Army, deploying twice to Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Ranger and Airborne Schools and a recipient of two Bronze Stars. He holds a master’s degree in international economics from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) with honors and an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in Foreign Affairs.
