Teri Barnett

Privacy Officer, Department of Interior (DOI)

Teri Barnett has served as the Departmental Privacy Officer for the Department of the Interior since 2012. In her role as Departmental Privacy Officer, Teri supports the Senior Agency Official for Privacy, manages an enterprise-wide Privacy Program, and oversees agency privacy compliance functions for the Department and its bureaus and offices. Teri has led the advancement of Interior’s Privacy Program and implementation of a privacy protection strategy to enhance agency decision making and ensure that privacy and civil liberties protections are incorporated into Interior’s policies, operations, and technologies in support of its diverse missions to preserve the nation’s natural resources and cultural heritage.

Prior to her role at Interior, Teri served as the Privacy Act Officer for the Commander, Navy Installations Command, U.S. Navy. Teri established a privacy program and promoted governance by developing policies and procedures to ensure transparency and improve compliance oversight.

Teri has 15 years of experience as a privacy professional in the public sector and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional/U.S. Government. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Hawaii William S. Richardson School of Law.
