Timothy Amerson
CISO, Social Security Administration
Since August 2022, Timothy Amerson has served as the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and Associate Commissioner for the Office of Information Security at the Social Security Administration (SSA). He was the winner of the 2024 Top 100 Information Security Professionals and a nominee for FedScoop 2024 Top 50 Federal Leadership. He is responsible for Cybersecurity Risk Management, Zero Trust Architecture, CIO FISMA Metrics, 24x7 Security Operations Center, Continuous Diagnostic and Mitigation, Security Engineering, Security Visibility, Privilege Access Management, Vulnerability Management, Penetration Testing, Red Teaming, Application Security, Security Integrity, Cyber-Insider Threat, Cyber-Supply Chain Risk Management, Authorizations & Accreditation, Workforce Security Training and FISMA Audits.
Prior to SSA, Mr. Amerson held several leadership positions in the Department of Veteran Affairs, including Director of Infrastructure Cybersecurity Management, Director (Detailed) of the National Data Center Operations and Logistics program, and Director of Infrastructure Technology Architecture Management, where he was nominated for FedScoop Best Bosses in Federal IT 2021.
Mr. Amerson received a bachelor’s in computer information science, graduate of the Army Cyber Center of Excellence and Command & General Staff College, and has obtained over 30 professional certifications including: Associate Certified Chief Information Security Officer, Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP), Certificate of Competence in Zero Trust (CCZT), Cisco Cybersecurity Operations (CyberOps), Certified Network Defense Architect (C|NDA), Certified Ethical Hacker (2023 Hall of Fame Inductee), Project Management Professional (PMP).
A retired Combat Army veteran with over 30 years of IT and cybersecurity leadership, he has been honored with the Legion of Merit Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and the Silver Order of Thor Medallion (Cyber).
