Wonzie L. Gardner, Jr., serves as the Office Head and Chief Human Capital Officer in the Office of Information and Resource Management (OIRM) at the National Science Foundation (NSF). As Office Head, Mr. Gardner coordinates agency-wide administrative and general management activities while providing leadership and direction for human resources, information systems, and administrative services at the NSF, ensuring all organizations within OIRM work in unison to support the agency and its customers. As Chief Human Capital Officer, Mr. Gardner has oversight of the human capital goals and priority objectives for the agency ensuring the agency has the people and processes needed to be successful. In August 2018, Mr. Gardner was designated as the NSF Director of the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU) where he is responsible for the National Science Foundation’s efforts to advance the business, regulatory, and environmental compliance concerns of small and disadvantaged businesses, including the development and implementation of appropriate outreach programs aimed at heightening the awareness of the small business community to the contracting opportunities available within the National Science Foundation. Mr. Gardner joined NSF as the Deputy Division Director for the Division of Administrative Services (DAS) in November 2014. In May 2016, Gardner was appointed as Division Director for DAS. He has served as the acting deputy office head for OIRM since January 2018 and stepped into the acting office head role shortly thereafter. He was promoted into the permanent Office Head position in February 2019. Prior to coming to NSF, Mr. Gardner served as the Director for Logistics and Facilities Management at the Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service. He has a distinguished military career, retiring as a U.S. Air Force Colonel in August 2010 and as the Inspector General for the Air Force District of Washington.
